people
When I was a shy, introverted kid who didn’t know how to make friends, I used to use art to lure people towards me. I’d sit in a corner and draw until I was surrounded by a group of curious onlookers who wanted to talk to me. I’m no longer as shy, but I’ve found that it’s a formula that works to this day. Every time I draw in public, I get strangers talking to me whether I like it or not.
But one of the things I enjoy most about any of my creative endeavours, be it visual arts or performing, is the feedback I get from my audience. It’s instant karma: I put something out there, and people want to give something back. They want to react, or simply share a part of themselves that resonates with my output.
Art is a great way for me to feel connected with humanity. Sometimes, I speculate that my true passion is actually people, and art is just a means for me to bridge the gap between strangers and myself.
